Jira Cloud Backup

Hi guys,

Typically how long does a Jira Cloud backup take to perform? 

If we do a backup during the day on a live server, what sort of impact does it have on the live environment?

I tried to search this online about the impact of Jira Cloud backups whilst users are using the system but couldn't find anything.

Any help or advice about it would be helpful.

Hi @Edward Davies and welcome to Community!

I contacted Atlassian support last month because I had some questions around backups, here is a recap of what they said:

• Backups used to affect live performances but not anymore. Atlassian Cloud has been in a new infrastructure where each service is independent now meaning that backup generation service won't affect other parts of Jira to serve users' requests.
• The infra changes applies to both Confluence and Jira so you should not experience performance issues anymore when attempting to generate a backup.

Hi Manon,

That's really helpful information, and very good to know as we could not find this elsewhere when searching for JIRA Cloud information.

As an aside, are existing user groups and all users' permissions copied to the backup file? 

If we import the backup file into a new cloud, will our users and user groups be visible and working as they were in the previous cloud?

Just an update, we have performed a test Cloud Import and the user permissions and user groups are copied over.

No worries, all sorted.

What we did notice as well, only linked Jira ticket URLs are renamed.

No URLs in comments or descriptions of Jira tickets are renamed from old to new Cloud instance URLs.

These URLs could be string replaced easily on the import XML.
