Our Jira instance has 2 projects. My goal is to back up both projects, or if easier the entire Jira instance, including attachments, avatars, and logos.
Within one project, in the project's Settings, Import and Export section > Backup Manager, I executed a cloud backup that was completed successfully with the Include attachments, avatars, and logos in the backup option checked.
My question: does that backup .zip file encompass the entire Jira instance (including both projects)? Or, does that backup .zip file solely include just the project from which the backup was requested within? Therefore, I would need to execute a 2nd backup from within the 2nd project to backup the additional project.
Please advise on backup scope.
Thanks!
Hi @Joe Rigley
Welcome to the community.
There is no import/export setting ootb in a Jira project, so this seems like a 3rd partty integration.
This is related to you information a backup of single project.
From the system settings, as Jira admin you can make a full zip backpu of the whole system (all spaces)
Thanks Marc. We have not installed any 3rd party add-ins for backups. Therefore, I believe this is an OOTB solution from Atlassian. Providing a screen shot as reference.

Hi @Joe Rigley
This is the main backup, this is not an option in Project Settings, but in System Settings (this threw me off).
This backup option, creates a full backup, so all projects are included.

Hello @Joe Rigley and welcome to the Atlassian Community!
From what I understand, the backup you generated does not include the entire Jira instance. It only contains data for the single project where you initiated the backup. To back up your second project, you will need to create a separate backup from that project’s Backup Manager — or consider a full-site export if you need everything in one archive.
If you’re looking to back up the entire Jira Cloud instance, including attachments, you may want to consider third-party backup solutions available on the Atlassian Marketplace, as they provide automated, instance-wide backup and restore options. For example, GitProtect backup and disaster recovery software for Jira Cloud (it’s free for up to 10 users): https://marketplace.atlassian.com/apps/1228719/gitprotect-io-for-jira-backup-restore-dr-data-management?hosting=cloud&tab=overview

Hi Daria - Thanks for the welcome. Your response aligns with what I was thinking, but not able to verify - thus the community reach out. The only thing that gives me a moment of pause is there is a 48 hour duration limit per back up request. When I go to the Settings' Backup Manager of the 2nd project in our instance and attempt a backup, I get denied with the attached error. Essentially, I have to wait 2 days for each backup. That limitation does not scale. If I had 15 projects, it would take me a month to back each of them up using the presumed OOTB Jira backup option. (Which is why I may need a 3rd party solution such as the GitProtect option you recommended).
Does anyone definitively know the backup manager's scope and/or why there is a 48 hour duration limit on backups?
The attached screen shot is taken from the 2nd project's Settings' Backup Manager feature. (It says the same thing on the original project too).
Also - thank you for the recommendation. Will consider that
