JIRA's web setup process keeps crashing and no response inn browser

Steve Jones November 13, 2011

Hi,

I have installed JIRA 4.4.3 on my VPS from WebFusion. All seemed to go fine with the installation and was initially able to access the JIRA setup process via web browser.

It seems that it fails, as soon as I try to do any action during setup process, sometimes making it further but always ending up with no response to the browser.

If I restart the VPS container it seems to briefly work for maybe one page load but fails again

I have checked the catalina.out log file and it seems to be reporting loads of errors as follow:-

Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM warning: Exception java.lang.OutOfMemoryError occurred dispatching signal SIGTERM to handler- the VM may need to be forcibly terminated

I have found various articles discussing changing of Java VM settings but not really sure what I need to do.

Has anyone else had experience running JIRA on a WebFusion VPS (or any other VPS) and if so could they advise what I may need to do.

Thanks, Steve

There does not seem to be any amount of tweaking of memory settings which enable JIRA/Confluence to successfully run within a WebFusion VPS (baseline intro VPS). I installed JIRA/Confluence successfully on a dedicated Ubuntu Server at home so the problem is obviously VPS related. WebFusion suggested moving to a dedicated server but obviously this has cost implications as this is almost 4x more expensive.

Ultimately abandoned running my own installation and opted for the Atlassian 'hosted' JIRA/Confluence. This also obviously has monthly cost implications but was only option in the end.

If anyone successfully manages to get JIRA/Confluence working successfully within a WebFusion VPS please update this post with details.

Well the error advised you to increase the memory, have you done this?

Change the jira/bin/setenv.sh and increase some memory. It might be that the java memory allocations is behaving otherwise becauseof the virtual VPS setup. This was my first thought.

Hi,

Thanks for your response. I have tried, quite exhaustively all sorts of settings in setenv.sh and to be honest I've ended up quite confused as to what are the best settings since many different articles are suggesting different approaches.

I know this is quite specific but I was wondering if anyone out there is actually using JIRA/Confluence running on a WebFusion VPS. I have the most basic VPS offering but even that still gives 1Gb memory (possibly even 2Gb) so as far as I am aware should be more than adequate for JIRA/Confluence.

It's not that it does not work at all, it usually survives for a short while allowing a few actions from the web front-end but as I tail -f the catalina.out log file eventually it shows a load of OutOfMemory errors and from then on the website does not respond.

I will keep trying more setting variations but was hoping someone with more knowledge of this could give me the optimum settings.

Thanks, Steve
