JIRA e-mail verification for every login

Hi,

I'm finding myself having to enter an e-mail verification code every time I log on to Atlassian JIRA.

This is different from my 2FA, for which I use biometrics.

I thought maybe it would be because of my organization managing my device (and the JIRA I'm trying to access), but that doesn't explain why one colleague has the same behavior as me, while others only have to enter an e-mail verification code once a week (as is the intended behavior, from what I've heard and would expect).

It's very tedious to have to do this at least once a day.

Any ideas?

Hi @Robert Malengre

Welcome to the community.

This is related to the Jira you are accessing.

You are probably classified on this instance as an external user. In the External User Policy on that site, the site admin has then defined that external user will receive a one-time passcode which they need to provide to logon.

Are you logging out and logging in again? If so it's likely that your organisation uses Atlassian Guard and 2FA re-verification makes you re-verify via 2FA each time you log in. It can be configured with a re-verification timeout of, say, 7 days. However, that setting only applies if you stay logged in and exceed that timeout. So, if your colleagues aren't logging out they only need to re-verify every 7 days. That would explain the difference.

Are you accessing Atlassian sites outside your domain? If so, it may be that their organisation uses Atlassian Guard.

The troubleshooting tips support gave me regarding 2FA issues:

  • Make sure they aren't logging out of Jira
  • Make sure they aren't clearing browser cache/cookies
  • Make sure they aren't using a private tab for browsing
  • Make sure they are using the same device
  • If they are an external user, check if their organisation also uses Atlassian Guard - if they do then their internal user settings will override your external user settings.
