JIRA cross project Release

anisha September 26, 2024

Hi - I am not sure if my question was published but I can't find it on my account. My question is about the cross project release feature JIRA had sometime back and was discontinued. We have 10 teams on a SAFe train. All teams are on different JIRA instance and we follow same release schedule. Is there a way to cascade the fix version to multiple teams on different JIRA instance. We use fix version to label our releases.

You could achieve this by creating a new issue type like Cross Projects Release that you will host in a specific project called Global Properties.

This issue type will contain the same fields that one needs to fill in when creating a new Version (Release) as well as a multi select field that will allow you to specify which projects you want to use the  Version.

In the post script of the workflow, on issue creation, you can create a new version in all projects specified.

You should validate that only one Cross Project Release issue type can exist with the same Version Name.

This approach will also allow you to extract values, from the Cross Project Release issue type via JQL.

Another advantage of this approach is that you can add extra properties (custom fields) to a Version, that the Jira out of the box solution does not allow you to add. (You can have only name, start date, release date)

In conjunction with this solution, you could use an app that our company developed CIFJ - Versions Dashboard for Jira https://marketplace.atlassian.com/apps/1235582/cifj-versions-dashboard?hosting=cloud&tab=overview

This will give you an overall view of all Versions existing in your organization.

Hi @anisha,

As @Walter Buggenhout suggested, it might be possible to achieve this by using Advanced Roadmaps, with Premium plan. So you could take a look and give it a try.

Another possibility would be to search on Atlassian Marketplace for an app that can help you track cross-project releases.

If you consider the idea of using an app, have a look over our Great Gadgets app; it offers all kind of charts that let you track your cross-project releases in a truly agile manner, and works really good with SAFe.

Hi @anisha,

I have the impression that I've seen this question before somewhere, indeed. Cross-project releases are a feature from Plans (advanced roadmaps), available in Jira Cloud Premium.

So you need a premium plan to use the feature, which is also only available within the Plans UI. You can't use it across multiple Jira instances (assuming you are referring to different atlassian sites with their own URLs), unless you would sync your issues into a single site and bring them together in a single, consolidated (Advanced Roadmaps) Plan.

In summary, your current setup most likely does not allow to do what you describe.

Hope this helps!

For further reference (since the feature is not discontinued, as far as I know): https://support.atlassian.com/jira-software-cloud/docs/create-a-cross-project-release-in-advanced-roadmaps/
