JIRA 7.8.1 momentarily inaccessible

We run JIRA behind Nginx (and have done so successfully for years).  Yesterday, we began having an issue where users would receive 502 - Bad Gateway error pages or, starting this morning, pop-ups.

Spent an hour last night poking and prodding in the system without experiencing any problems.  This morning, we made it about an hour before people started having issues. 

Starting about 10:15 AM, the problem is happening about every 5-10 minutes and takes anywhere from 30 seconds to several minutes to correct itself.  The database is on its own server and has very low load levels.

We've got 30 users, 21 of which are online within the last hour and a half.

User-installed plug-ins are ScriptRunner, Automation for JIRA (now disabled, no effect), and Repeating Issues.

Has anyone else experienced this and, if you were able to resolve, how were you able to get it stable again?
