Items marked "done" carried into next Sprint?

Gino Guarnere November 10, 2022

Hey there,

Just created my first "sprint" in Jira, and completed all the tasks (I marked them as "done" in Jira on the board).  When I "completed" the sprint, I was warned that 7 items would carry over, but every item in the sprint was marked as "done." Now these items are moved to my next sprint, but they have a strikethrough through the ticket number and are marked as "done" in the next sprint.  I'm hoping this is simple, but any insight on how to avoid that in the future and get these "finished" items out of my next sprint?  Thank you!Screen Shot 2022-11-10 at 11.59.36 AM.png

Ah, um, your board is misconfigured.

Only issues that are "Blocked" will be considered "done" when you close the sprint here!

The "done" flag is causing the strike-out.  In the background, this is telling Jira "when an issue goes into this status, set a resolution on it".  The strikeout comes from a non-empty resolution - Jira says the issue is "resolved".

Boards do not use resolution, or even status, directly.  An issue is done when it is in the last column on the board (and has all of its subtasks, if any, in the same column)

Move your "done" column to the right, and everything will work fine.

Hmm. That sounded easy :-). Screenshot attached.  Is this correct?

Looks spot on to me, yes!

I assume you've kept the little green "done" tick on the "done" column.

It won't fix your old data, but when you close this sprint, all the done issues will drop out of the backlog, and anything in to-do, in-progress or blocked will move into the next sprint (or to the backlog if you want)

Thank you, @Nic Brough -Adaptavist-

I didn't realize the column order mattered, but this is great!  I'll let you know how I do at the end of Sprint 2!!!

Hi @Gino Guarnere ,

Was the "done" status mapped on your board when you closed the sprint? You can find this in Board Configuration -> Columns. We've had similar issues and this was the resolution we found.

@Krista Nicol Thank you for the reply.  I think so?  Screenshot attached. Let me know if you see anything strange? Screen Shot 2022-11-10 at 1.08.48 PM.png

@Gino Guarnere That looks right to me. What's your filter for the board? Is there any criteria that's preventing those stories from appearing on your board/removing them once they're complete?

I can filter on the board, but I'm wondering why when completing the sprint I was prompted to carry finished stories to the next sprint?  I double checked and everything was "done."
