Issues with recent Jira Data Center upgrade.

Brian Goodwin June 21, 2023

I just upgraded from Jira Data Center 9.7.xx to 9.8.0 using the upgrade wizard.  The wizard instructed me that it performed a backup of my Jira configuration and projects.  However, the data failed to restore once the upgrade was complete.

Can I manually recover my data from the upgrade?  If so, please point me to the steps required.

Thanks,

Brian

@Brian Goodwin Welcome to the Atlassian community

The data should not be restored during the upgrade.  The backup is made so you can restore to the same version you were previously on if the upgrade failed.  To do the recovery you would install a fresh copy of 9.7.XX and then recover to that.  When you say that the upgrade to 9,8.0 did not work what errors were you getting?

@Brian Goodwin That makes more sense.  You need to follow the upgrade steps here: https://confluence.atlassian.com/adminjiraserver0908/upgrading-jira-installer-1236935565.html    As part of those steps you need to make sure you update config files.  See the information below.  These files will be in your backup.

Apart from the above, you need to re-apply all other modifications. Here are the most important files:

  • server.xml
  • dbconfig.xml
  • jira-config.properties
  • web.xml
  • setenv.sh / setenv.bat (memory allocation and other JVM arguments)

Brant,

Thanks so much for your help!  This points me in the right direction.  When you search for an answer, it is so easy to head down a rabbit hole.  I really appreciate you sending me down the right path.

Thanks again!

Brant,

I am new to Jira admin and I'm not really an IT expert, so forgive me if I'm asking something ignorant.

I had setup my email server and several projects in Jira 9.7.xx.  I then upgraded to 9.8.0.  I expected the email server settings, and the project data that I had created would be available after the upgrade.  However, I lost all of those settings and all of the projects that I had created.  This is a new Data Center install and I'm still using the built in Database (which is something I know I have to change).

I used the upgrade wizard to perform the upgrade, but it seemed to "hang" during the upgrade process.

I thought those settings would be available somewhere in the backed up data.  Does that make sense?

Thanks for any help!

Brian
