Issues showing on my Kanban board, but not my Backlog

I have created a new JIRA Project with several Kanban boards, each one having the backlog turned on. However, I am not able to see any items that are in progress on the backlog, only Backlog items and To Do items. I would like to also see the In Progress and In QA items on my backlog. Is there any way to make them available in their respective columns on the board and also in the backlog?

Hi @Anna Garst

It depends on which project/board type you have, visibility differs:

Classic Project/Board:

  • For Classic Boards, the Backlog is an extension to the existing column mapping.
  • The first status(es) are mapped to the Backlog "column" in column settings - issues start in this column (assuming it's mapped to the first status in the workflow)
  • When you want to move issues onto the active board, you drag-and-drop these into the first column via the Backlog view - the first column is the section at the top
  • Once the issue moves into the next column, it disappears from the backlog as it is now actively being progressed

Next-Gen Project/Board:

  • For Next-Gen, both board and backlog are visualised in the backlog screen.
  • Issues remain in the backlog until they are added to the active board - it is not based on status, meaning an issue can be in any workflow status and never leave the backlog
  • Once you choose to add the issue to the board (drag-and-drop into the top section), it remains visible in the backlog screen's board section in any status, including when it's Done. It will only disappear when archived from Done.

Hi @Ste Wright

This is very helpful. We have just transitioned from a Next Gen board to a Classic board, so I am used to having my backlog contain all the in progress items. Is there any way to keep this functionality in the Classic board?

Hi @Anna Garst

Unfortunately not; the Classic Kanban board only works in that method above.

Only the Scrum board can have issues in both the active board and the backlog view in Classic. That board isn't based on status - as its based on planned/activated sprints.
