Is there any way to add Release states?

Currently, we use an issue type called "Release" instead of the Jira Releases functionality. We started this many years ago. Reasons were:

• We release individual components, so we want the Component to be associated with the release. Native Releases don't support Components
• Jira Releases have three states, deployed/not deployed. You can't track a release through stages, i.e. Dev, UAT, Staging, Prod, etc

It seems a bit crazy that there isn't better "Release" support in Jira, but maybe I'm missing something. How do others track releases? The only article that I've seen is one written by someone who is pitching their own plugin, and I'd like some other input.

Hi @Benjamin Peikes sadly I find it necessary to use a plugin for this type of activity.  I won't push a plugin on you but it is a reality especially if you want to release the way you are.  I can say there are some plugins out there that handle component versions and others that can handle release management.

Atlassian team is working on Progressive Delivery functionality for Release Hub. This is gonna bring multiple statuses. Still no component versions.
