Is there a way to stop people from adding tasks to a request after a request is technically closed?

Cory Britton June 27, 2018

People are still adding tasks to old projects after they ended and leaving things hanging open.

 Should we have a pending closed status to prevent new tasks from being added to requests?

Determine a way to identify in Jira and send reminders to the dev team managers.  They will also see all open tasks on their Quality Control Dashboard and could manage it this way.

HI @Cory Britton

Welcome to the community!

IF you do not want to add/create a task into the end project then create a separate permission scheme for this and remove all users/roles/groups from browse project and create issue permission and then associate it with the respective project.

Hence no will be able to see the project in project list and no will be able to create a task into it.

@Yogesh Mude,

Thanks for the reply! is there a way to enact this across the whole portfolio? A way for the system to enact this automatically so that it is not a manual process? Or if there is not a way to make this automatic is there a way to create an efficient manual process?

What do you mean by is there a way to enact this across the whole portfolio?

There is no automatic process for this, you need to create the permission scheme and then you need to associate with respective project.

We are trying to make this happen for all projects in JIRA.

then associate this permission scheme to all the project to which you want to restrict the user from creating a task.

What I get from this is that the project will no longer be view-able? If that is the case then that solution will not work as we will still need to be able to view the request for historical purposes.

@Cory Britton the project will be visible only the user those have jira Admin and project admin rights.

The normal user will not be visible. If you want normal user also should visible the projects then give the Browse project permission to users/roles/groups.

@Yogesh Mude

I suppose i should maybe be more specific or I may be using terminology incorrectly.

We want to be able to stop allowing tasks to be added to requests, when the request has been technically completed.  We cannot close a request when an open task is attached to it. How to we stop people from adding tasks to a requests past its end date?

@Cory Britton What do you mean by We want to be able to stop allowing tasks to be added to requests

Could you please elaborate more about Task and requests.

Cory Britton June 27, 2018

@Yogesh Mude

The way we use JIRA is that a project is a system/department within out Company. A request is a project tied to system., then tasks tied to said request(project).

Our issue is that a request(project) has ended but before we can close the request(project) tasks are opened under it which prevents us from closing the request(project). We would like to be able to stop tasks from being created under the request(project) once the request(project) has ended/completed.

I hope this better explains what it is we are trying to accomplish. We have been told by our JIRA Admins/developers that it isn't possible but i was requested by management to see if there is a way or not.

Thanks!

thanks for the detailed description @Cory Britton...Yes, the same thing I am trying to say here is...

As you mentioned in your comment you are referring individual project as a request correct?

Once the request (Project) has been completed/ended then you don't want user should create/add the task to it(project) correct?

So as i have mentioned in my earlier comment you can restrict the users from creating/adding a task in the request/project using permission scheme..

Just you need to remove the user/role/group from the create issue permission.

If i am not wrong or understood correctly then hope it helps.

Yes that is correct that we are using an individual request as a project. You are also correct that we don't want a user to create or add a task to the request(project).

It helps I will definitely pass this along and see if it helps our JIRA admin/dev team.

Thanks!
