Is there a way to generate project reports or dashboard in JIRA by project categories?

I'd like to create a dashboard of projects by project types and categories of projects. So far, in the gadgets provided, I only see that dashboards can only be generated based on project names. It would be great to display the types of projects and categories assigned. This would be a higher level project dashboard view for senior managers.

What about creating your own JQL and adding it to the Dashboard that you will be sharing with upper management?
