Within projects for our clients we use components for the actual registration show based on a year. We would like to be able to archive older years, 17-18 for instance so the client only see's the current year's activity.

Archiving components is a feature that is not available in Jira for now.
We do have a feature request for that: Archive project components.
As you can see from our product team last update, unfortunately we don't have any plans to support this in JIRA for the foreseeable future.
