Is there a way for the burn down chart to burn down based on the time logged on the sub tasks?

Dan Wieder March 7, 2019

Should the time be logged on the story level or the sub-task. I am trying to understand where to log time in order to reflect on the burn down chart, so that it is updated everyday.

Hello Dan,

Welcome to Atlassian Community!

Unfortunately, JIRA does not measure the time logged for sub-tasks in agile reports, only User Stories are taking into account.

This is a good practice based on Agile methodology, however, the pain point is that the Sub-task estimation is not automatically added to the parent Story. We have a huge suggestion reported to our development team with lots of feedbacks and votes here:

Sum estimates from sub-tasks in user stories

Please, vote and watch the suggestion to increase its priority and also receive notifications about any updates.

Additionally, feel free to check other customers feedback and workarounds to know if any option provided works for you. In my opinion, The best way would be to use Epics and Stories as a hierarchy option instead of Stories and Sub-tasks.

Let us know if you still have any questions. :)

Got it. So we should be logging time on the story and not the sub-task in order for it to reflect on the burn down chart? is that correct?

Hello Dan,

Yes, you got it just right! Only the story points of parent tasks are counted in the burn-down chart.

Let me know if you face new questions when configuring your estimations.

Have a nice week! :)

Hi Patterson,

My question was whether we should log-time on the story in order for it to reflect on the burn down chart. We are not using story points in our estimations. We are using time estimates.

Thanks,

Dan

Thank you for the clarification, Dan.

Sorry for my misunderstanding, but the same logic is also applied for the time tracking format (Original Estimate, Remaining Estimate, Time logged).

It is only counted only for parent issues and not for Sub-tasks when you use agile reports, as you can see in the feature request provided before:
