Hi, I am working on a company managed project with standard (not premium) Jira access. I would like to know if I can view the due dates of Epic and Story items when viewing the timeline view as trying to estimate the due dates from the broad timeline at the top of the screen is too hard for stakeholders and teams. Ideally I'd like to be able to screenshot things from my timeline view and for the receivers to be able to clearly see and know due dates from the timeline screenshots alone, not having to cross reference it with some sort of csv exported file.

I read in other posts that viewing start and due date in standard timeline view is possible but couldn't find any step by step explanations on how to actually achieve this. Thanks in advance!

Hi @Linae Luong

Trudy's right that Standard's basic Timeline can't add columns or print a date value beside each item. That column/field display only exists in Plans (Premium/Enterprise), which is what those other posts were describing.

What Standard does give you: each schedule bar spans Start date to Due date, so the due date sits at the bar's right edge against the date axis at the top. Switch that axis to Weeks (toggle, bottom-right) for the finest date reading the basic view offers. One catch on a company-managed project: Start date and Due date must be on the work item's screen first, or the bars won't render. More on the timeline.

Best, Gabriela

Hello @Linae Luong

Welcome to the Atlassian community.

Can you provide links to the posts that you found that said it is possible to see date fields in the basic/standard Timeline view? It is possible that the posts are providing outdated information or actually referring to the Timeline in the Plans feature.

To the best of my knowledge it is not currently possible, nor has it been previously possible, to add columns to the basic Timeline to show the content of any field.

@Linae Luong

In Jira Standard, the native timeline view has limited customization options, so displaying due dates directly on timeline bars in a clear, screenshot-friendly way may not be possible depending on your project setup and the fields available in the view. You can usually open an issue to see its dates, and you may be able to configure visible fields in some views, but the standard timeline is not designed for highly customized stakeholder reporting.

If your main goal is to share a clear timeline where stakeholders can immediately understand Epic and Story due dates without checking a CSV or opening each issue, I’d recommend trying Planyway for Jira.

In Planyway, you can create a timeline view with the fields and layout you need, including dates, Epics, Stories, and other Jira issues. You can then save that view and share a link to it with stakeholders, so they always see the same configured timeline instead of relying only on screenshots or exported files.
