mailHandler has features to create/update a ticket.
Is there also feauture for setting the status of a ticket: inProgress/Closed?
Have not found anything regarding this in the config.

Unfortunately the OOTB handler do not have the ability to change status via mail.
You would have to look for add-ons (like Email this Issue) which would extend this basic functionality.
