Is it possible to have a only a few users use Advanced Roadmaps?

Hi, I'm working for an organisation that could really make use of Advanced Roadmaps but they have 50 users and the jump from standard to premium to make use of AR is not financially appealing (I do believe it would be worth it but it's hard to convince them).

Is the switrch to premium for all users the only option? Is there any way we could have just a few users using it to update tickets and have all other users (who don't really need AR access) just use their boards?

Hi @Andrew Groom,

Welcome to Atlassian Community!

The short answer is no, you cannot have a subset of users be on Premium while the rest are on Standard. All users within Jira has to be on the same level.

You may want to take a look at the Marketplace, there are multiple apps in there that have similar features to Advanced roadmap if you do not want to subscribe to Premium. The ones that come to my mind are Structure, BigPicture and Structure.gantt, but search the marketplace and you will find more.

Penalizing users for having more members (forcing all or none to upgrade) seems like a way to lose customers.

Just starting to use Jira and it leaves a lot to be desired in ease of use and customer care.  Really it's way of managing users feels like a car salesman trying to add on extra surcharges to boost profits at the expense of the customer.

I had to create my own assigned teams and users that I manually build with a custom control to work around this limitation.  We have users that are not responsible (not in house) or don't have full privileged to be in Jira, but still are doing/getting work assigned to them.  It is a small project between multiple companies that Jira may just be overkill for.  Just wish it was easier to administer.

Thanks for the replies, everyone. I haven't seen anything in marketplace that has power and simplicity of AR (capacity planning, auto scheduling in particular) unless I'm missing something (BigPicture looks interesting but massive learning curve from memory). Another problem is that the team using JIRA is planning on switching to Azure Devops (team is happy with JIRA but it's a wider org policy) so I had a cunning plan where we could:

- set up a separate premium JIRA instance with just a few users

- implement an ADO <-> JIRA integration (e.g., TFS4JIRA, Unito) to sync ADO data to JIRA, use AR for reporting and planning and possibly push team assignments

I haven't seen anything in ADO that comes close to Advanced Roadmaps either, hence this might be a workable solution.

What do you think?

Welcome to the Atlassian Community!

You're absolutely right to start with Advanced Roadmaps, but from only a short description of how you work, I really can't offer much guidance.

I'd definitely take a look at BigPicture and EasyAgile, though, they're excellent tools for what you're trying to do.  I'd also have a look at Structure (and the blatant advert for my organisation's product) - hierarchy for Jira

In my opinion, all of these products, combined with Jira, offer something better than Azure Devops.

And if you go with a mix of ADO and Jira, all of them give you good integrations so that those who prefer ADO can work there and those who prefer Atlassian can work there, and everything stays in line with the other.

Hello @Andrew Groom

Welcome to the Atlassian community!

The licensing cost per user for Premium or Standard is for the entire instance.  There is no support for paying the Premium price for just some users so they can access AR, and paying the Standard price for the rest.
