Is it possible to copy/clone a business project in Jira ?

Hi. I have a project which have a lot of data. I want to make few changes in the workflow of that project, but it will be risky. So, I am looking for support if there is any option to copy/clone the project with all data and configuration. It will help me keep my board safe and I can edit the cloned board.

Jira Cloud now provides an out-of-the-box solution to copy Jira spaces and all including work items. We use a template space which then gets copied to a new space.

1. Open Jira admin «System» settings
2. Under the section «Import and export» choose «External System Import»
3. Choose either «Jira (software space)» or «Jira (business space)» depending on the type of your template space.
4. Follow the wizard

After successfully copying the space, you'll receive an email. In my experience, it took about 5 – 10 more Minutes for the work items to actually appear in the newly created space though.

Our template space has only 32 task and 84 sub task work items (116 total) which are all pretty basic: Just a summary and a simple description. I have not tested any other functionality.

Copying to an existing space does not seem to be possible. You should however be able to copy them to a new space and then bulk move them to an existing space, IIRC.

Hey @John Funk thanks for the info. I was aware of this post being relatively old. Since I was myself searching for a solution for this issue and this post came up first in the search. I thought I'd post my answer to this question for others like me to find.

What would've been the correct way to post my solution? I couldn't seem to find a way to create an article or improve an existing Atlassian documentation.

Thanks for the feedback. And to be honest, you would just wait until the next post looking for a solution like that or identifying a similar problem. Atlassian will be removing many of these old posts pretty soon, so your comment won't even be seen in a few weeks/months. 

Or you can create an Article if you have those permissions, or create a Discussion.

as others have pointed out, while it is possible to create a new project with shared settings checkbox, but that will only use shared schemes nothing else.

Therefore we built a third party solution 'Project Templates for Jira' that allows to clone projects and optionally reuse the settings as template for future usage.

The new project will additionally include issues, maintain issue status, issue links, issue reporters, components, version and even all the users and groups that have project roles assigned. You decide to not clone things that you don't need.

Please note that there are NO feature restriction during free trial so go ahead and clone as much as you want during 30 days testing.

Yes, it is possible to copy/clone a work management project in Jira, but Jira doesn't provide a built-in feature to do this directly. However, there are a few approaches you can consider to achieve this:

Manual Cloning

1. Create a New Project: Manually create a new project with the same configuration as your existing project.
2. Export and Import Issues: You can export issues from the original project and import them into the new project using the CSV import feature. This way, you'll have the same data in both projects.
3. Copy Workflows and Schemes: Manually copy workflows, screens, field configurations, and other schemes to the new project.

If you are willing to use a third-party app, you could try our app Deep Clone for Jira. Deep Clone can clone whole projects, including their configuration and issues with its Project Clone feature. By default, Deep Clone only associates the new project with the configuration schemes of the source project, but under Show advanced scheme options you can configure Deep Clone to clone the source instead.

I recommend you to start by creating a new project and copying the configuration settings.

In native jira, you cannot create full copy of existing project. You can only create a new project with same configuration as in old project but without any tickets in it. 

Workaround: 

1. Create new project using create project with shared configuration

2. Create copy of all workflows used in project

3. Create new workflow scheme and map the new copied workflows to it

4. Map new workflow scheme to new project. 

5. Export tickets from old project with all required fields to csv

6. Import the tickets to new project.

Please note: You would need to create boards, and other items manually.

Hi Prince,

Jira should have the ability to "clone" a project without data within the options available in the "Create project" menu.

As for cloning a project with all data/configuration, that is a more complex set of requirements that typically requires additional features enabled via the Atlassian Marketplace. Off the top of my head, Configuration Manager for Jira has support for this feature, with several limitations described here.
