Is it possible to clone an issue type or field type scheme from an existing scheme?

I want to take one of the schemes in use by my company and use it as the starting point for a new scheme so that I can make minor changes for my project.  Is this possible?  Also, if I can do that how do I then associate the new scheme with my project to replace the old one that I cloned?

Yes, you can copy existing schemes and later associate them with other projects. You do it (if you are a Jira admin) from the project administration level.
