I need to assign tickets to a number of different people as tasks require a joint effort. Is it possible to set up a group and then assign the ticket to that group?
Not directly, as "group assignee" invariably causes ownership problems within the team. The assignee should be the one single person with the ownership of the issue (even if it's only to re-assign it to someone else).
But, naming a group a generally responsible as well as the single owner is good - create a custom field with the team names, or even a group-picker to do it.
