I have an automation rule with a "For Parent Branch". In that branch, if a certain condition is met, I want to update a field in the triggering issue while in the branch (specifically clear the parent field in the triggering issue).
How can I do that?

Not from inside of a branch to the parent, however...
I hypothesize you are branching to the parent to use its data to decide if the trigger issue should be updated. If so, you could instead use Lookup Issues to get the parent issue's data, and use that in smart value conditions to decide, and then the edit will be against the trigger issue. That is, remove the branch and try this:
Kind regards,
Bill
