If my project was created from a scheme can I make changes to the project without affecting others?

I understand that schemes are used to help standardize projects across an environment. However, I know that if you make modifications to a project that has a scheme it will also affect all other projects with that scheme. Is there a way we can avoid this?

(i.e can I add fields to a project with a scheme and it wont affect other projects with the scheme?)

If a project share a scheme you will need to copy this scheme and make modification to the new created sheme
