Hi, one of our former coworkers set up a Jira account for our business. However, he has since left the firm. We are attempting to enter Jira and reset the password via email after recovering their email address, but it appears that he set the app password. How can we make it right?
Hello @Aysel
This usually happens when the original admin leaves without handing over access. Since Jira is tied to an Atlassian account, things like app passwords or extra security can block normal password resets.
In this case, the easiest way forward is to contact Atlassian support directly.
You can use this link: https://www.atlassian.com/company/contact
Explain that the original admin is no longer with the company and you need access. They may ask you to verify ownership using your company email, billing info, or site URL.
Once verified, they can transfer admin access to you.
This is a common issue when the original admin leaves without transferring ownership. Since Jira accounts are tied to Atlassian accounts, you won’t be able to reset everything if an app password or security settings are blocking access.
First, try using the official password recovery option again, but make sure you are accessing the correct Atlassian account linked to Jira. If that still doesn’t work, the best approach is to contact Atlassian Support directly and explain that your former employee no longer has access. You may need to verify your company ownership or domain to regain control.
If your company domain is linked, Atlassian can help you claim the account and assign a new admin. You can also check admin access through any existing users in your organization who might still have admin rights.
For a step-by-step process, it’s best to read the guide on Atlassian’s support pages about account recovery and admin transfer.
