My account crownhead.atlassian.com was archived due to in-activity.

Support has told my me that my data cannot be recovered, because of the time that has elapsed.

Now I want to use the same domain, but I am get the message "That name is taken. Try a different one."

Hi @Adeyemi Otubusen

So either the domain is taken by someone else, or raise a new request to figure out who you could use this domain again.

Here on the portal we can't help on this.

Hi @Adeyemi Otubusen,

Thanks for reaching out, and I'm sorry for the frustration this has caused.

To clarify what's happening: when an Atlassian Cloud site is archived (whether manually or due to inactivity), the site name is not immediately released back into the available pool. It remains reserved against the original Organization for a period of time as a security measure - this prevents bad actors from quickly claiming abandoned subdomains and impersonating the previous owner (a practice known as "subdomain hijacking").

This is why you're seeing "That name is taken. Try a different one" even though the original site is no longer active and the data is no longer recoverable.

Here's what you can do to reclaim the name:

  1. Raise a new support request at Atlassian Support and explicitly state that you'd like your site name released from your archived Organization so it can be reused. This is a different request type from data recovery, so please don't reopen the original ticket — start a new one to ensure it's routed to the correct team.
  2. Include the following details to speed up verification:
    • The exact site URL
    • The Organization ID (if you have it)
    • The email address of the original site admin/owner
    • Confirmation that you understand the data cannot be recovered and you only want the name released
  3. Identity verification: Support will verify you as the original owner before releasing the name. This is typically done via the admin email on file.
  4. Once Support confirms the release, you should be able to sign up for a new site without the "name is taken" error.

A couple of things to be aware of:

  • The release process is manual and may take a few business days.
  • In some cases (e.g., if the original Organization still exists and contains other active products), Support may ask you to fully delete the Organization first.

Hope this helps you get back up and running. Let me know if you run into any blockers along the way.

Best regards,

Anastasiia

Hi @Adeyemi Otubusen ,

as @Marc -Devoteam- correctly stated, the domain might also have been taken by someone else. To be sure, I have flagged this ticket for an Atlassian Support Engineer to look into this; if it's blocked by your old site, maybe they would be open to unblock it so you can register a new site.

Greetings
Philipp
