Hello @sonia handa

this usually isn’t a board problem, it’s a workflow problem 🙂

A column on a Kanban board is just a visual container. You can only add statuses that already exist in the workflow. If you can’t add one, it’s almost always because that status doesn’t exist (or you can’t edit the workflow).

So first question: is this company-managed or team-managed?

If it’s company-managed:

Go to Board settings → Columns. On the right you’ll see unmapped statuses.

If your new status isn’t there, it means it’s not in the workflow.

Then go to Project settings → Workflows → Edit, add the status there, publish — and then map it to the column.

If it’s team-managed:

You don’t manage statuses from the board.

Go to Project settings → Issue types → Workflow, add the new status there first. After that, it becomes available on the board.

Short version:

Columns don’t create statuses. Workflow does.

Hi @sonia handa ,

Can you share some additional info 👀, such as:

  • Are you seeing any specific error/message? How does UI look in general (can you potentially share a screenshot)?
  • Are you using company-managed or team-managed space (guessing it's the first one)?
  • Have you connected the status/workflow with the specific work type used in the space/board?

Cheers,
Tobi

I think you are using Company managed project that is why you are facing this problem.

Hey @sonia handa

Welcome to the community!

To add to the previous responses, if you're using a company-managed project and it uses a workflow that's not shared with other projects, verify if you have the 'Edit Workflows' project permission.

If the workflow is shared among multiple projects, only the Jira admins can modify the workflow.

Thanks!

Hi Sonia,

Are you using:

  • Company-managed project?
  • Team-managed project?
