I am a free tier plan and when I try to access my boards or work items I get this (even thought I am the admin) - not sure how to access my boards... seems like a dead end loop. Can you help?

This is a common issue: "Admin status" does not include "Product access" by default. Even as a Site Admin, you must assign yourself a seat to access boards.
Steps to fix:
Go to admin.atlassian.com → Directory → Users.
Select your profile.
Under Product access, toggle Jira Software ON.

Being an admin, especially in Cloud systems, does not automatically mean having access everywhere. Atlassian systems have a very layered permission model, especially for security reasons.
