How to write a rule to send a list of changed issues and their changes every day at 9am?

Antigone K January 23, 2024

Hello!

I'm trying to write a rule to send an email listing each issue that's been updated in the past 24 hours, including what's been changed (from and to).

For reals, this seems like it ought to be fairly easy, and I'm probably missing something that's too close to my face ;-).

thank you!

Hi @Antigone K

What problem are you trying to solve?  That is, why do this?  Knowing that may help the community to offer better suggestions for that problem.  Thanks!

Kind regards,
Bill

Thank you, @Bill Sheboy!

I'm tracking a project and need to keep the client updated without giving them access to the JIRA instance because they don't want to learn to use yet another tool.

So I have a rule setup to send them an email with any of the comments changes, but sometimes that's too many updates in a day. To minimize this, I was hoping to create something like a digest email that included al of the updated issues and what's been updated.

The only other solution I've found so far is to enter everything into JIRA, and then enter it all again into a Pages document to create a PDF to send to the client. Which seems like a ridiculous "solution".

Hopefully this clarifies? Thanks!

Thanks for that additional information.

The issue change history contains most of the changes over time, but using that would not match your scenario.  To have a people-friendly digest for those without Jira access, you may want to investigate a marketplace addon / app specifically for this purpose, and then send the report using some scheduling mechanism (e.g., email forwarding).

The reason I suggest that is the changelog which is available to automation rules is not complete, and indeed has defects (e.g., some list fields).  And so it could not be relied upon to give a full and accurate list of changes over time.

Sorry, You are not missing anything. Reporting on "from/to" changed values "after the fact" is not easy or trivial. In fact I dont  think its even possible to do, even if you make a REST Api call to get change log because your requirement is that you want a list of issues which got changed and their from/to values.. Just too much of an ask..

Best you can do is to capture changes as they happen and notify you or do something with it.

Ugh, @Kalyan Sattaluri that's disappointing. Thank you for responding!
