How to use custom filters in dashboards

Katrin Erhardt

Hello Community,

I have the following use case: I would like to evaluate or add up the values of the "Original Estimate" field within a board
I have created the following custom filter for this purpose:
issuetype in (Story, Task) AND status = "Next" AND originalEstimate is not EMPTY
My idea was to integrate it into a dashboard to display the sum of the values from a board column.
But now I can't find the custom filter in “View all Filters” - probably because it can only be used in the respective board.
Can you help here or provide an alternative solution? Thanks in advance!

Hi @Katrin Erhardt

If you're not seeing the custom filter under “View all filters,” it’s likely tied to the board and hasn't been shared with you.

Each board is backed by a saved filter, but it won’t appear under “View all filters” unless:

  • You have permission to view it (i.e. it’s shared with you), and
  • It's not a custom filter created within a team-managed project, which are scoped to that board only.

To use the filter in dashboards:

  • Go to the board → open Board settings (or the 3-dot menu) → find the Filter Query (JQL).
  • Copy the JQL → go to Filters → Create filter, paste it, and save it.
  • Share the filter as needed.

This will make it available globally, including for use in dashboards and gadgets.

Kind Regards
Utkarsh
