In other bug tracking systems I've seen it's quite common to have a progress bar next to a milestone that displays how much of the work is done and how much is left -- see for instance here.
Our JIRA has a version x.y with some issues closed, some open, is there a way to show a progress bar on the project homepage similarly to Trac / RedMine / others?
For a project version, you can find these details. Like this:

There are also report plugins which will give you more details like burn down etc!
