How to show custom field on issue screen?

Almighty Drake December 3, 2023

Hi guys,

I created a custom issue type and a custom field. However I can’t see the custom field in a screen of this issue type or any other issue type.. doesn’t have to be in the custom one.

I added it to the screenscheme but I still can’t see it and I checked whether or not the field is hidden… it’s not.

I am grateful for every answer.

best regards

Can someone help me how I get my custom field be seen on an issue screen?

Hi @Almighty Drake ,

Your question seems to suggest you are trying to configure a company managed project. However, it would be good if you could confirm this is the case. The short instructions below are for this scenario.

If you create a new issue type and a new custom field and you want to use these in a project, there are quite a few steps you need to take.

  1. In the project you want the issue type and field to appear, check the project settings > summary page and see what issue type scheme, workflow scheme and issue type screen scheme the project is using.
  2. Update the issue type scheme to add the new issue type to the project. If you don't want the issue type to appear in other projects, make sure the issue type scheme is not shared with other projects.
  3. Decide if you want the other issue types in your project to use the new custom field as well. If so, navigate to project settings > screens and locate the screen that is now associated with your new issue type in your project. It will be associated with other issue types as well. Select the screen you want to add the field to and do so. (*)
  4. After adding the field to the desired screen, also check the layout in your project settings. Make sure the new field is not hidden in the layout. Move it to the desired section if necessary.

(*) If you do not want your new field on the other issue types in your project, you will need to create a separate configuration for the new issue type. That means that you will need to:

  1. Create at least 1 screen that has all the fields for your new issue type. You may even create more screens if you want different fields when creating / viewing / editing the issue type.
  2. Create a screen scheme that associates your screen(s) to the create / edit / view operations for the issue type.
  3. Update your project's issue type screen scheme, by adding the new screen scheme from step 2 and linking it to your new issue type.

For more details on how to configure screens, see these support articles:

Hope this helps!

In the Screenshot the Custom Field is assigned to a issue type screen and i added it also to an issue, which is secondary since i just want to see the field on any issue type.

However I still cant see the custom field on an issue type screen when i create an epic or any other issue type.

Did i forget smth?

Best regards

Hi @Almighty Drake ,

I am afraid there is no such thing as an issue type screen. There's just screens.

Your screenshot just shows a screen. At the top of that screen is the screen's name. Before doing anything else, navigate to the project where you are trying to create an issue and check the following:

  1. in the bottom left corner check if your project is company-managed;
  2. navigate to project settings > issues > screens and make sure that you see the same screen listed there as the one you shared a screenshot from.
  3. If so, make sure that this screen is associated with the create operation for the issue type you are trying to create. And - expanding on that - make sure that this is the case for all issue types you want to see the fields on.
  4. If all the above items seem correct, then check out project settings > issues > layout and make sure that the fields are not in a hidden section there.µ

Screens are associated to projects using schemes. So you don't just need to add fields to a screen, you should also ensure that screens are linked to the project(s) you want to use these screens or update any other screens also used in different projects.

If you still can't see why your fields aren't appearing after checking all the above, hit the ... button near the top right of a create issue screen and select the option Find your field:

If that still does not help, please provide an answer to all items I listed here and share what the find your field feature tells you.

I followed the last step on find your field...

can you instruct me what to do next?

Another question: how do i delete fields on the screen?

What to do next is in the blue rectangle on your screenshot. This is where you can find show fields on the issue create screen:

To delete fields on the screen, yet again: locate the screen from project settings > issues > screens. Open the screen design in the same way as you did when you first added the fields. And then click the remove button that appears when you hover over a field on your screen.

Oh me dumb...

Thank you so much.

Finally!

But how can I include my custom fields when it comes to automation... so when the automation creates a task or sub task... how can i configure the fields on autogenerated issues?Screenshot 2023-12-04 153415.png

is the "choose fields to set" field for customizing autogenerated issues?

or whats the field for ?

The choose fields to set option lets you select all the fields you are going to fill out in the newly created issue. They then appear one below the other, where you can decide what value they should get. You can choose to hardcode the values or copy them from elsewhere.

On a side note; if your original question was answered, please do accept it, so it may help other users as well. It is also better to create a new question here when it is really something else - for the same reason. Separate questions / answers are easier to find for other people with similar challenges.
