How to setup a kanban board showing one story level work type, and it's sub-tasks

We have a use case where a sub-team would like a board of their own in a company-managed Jira Software project where one of the story level work types should show, including any sub-tasks setup as children to those story items. However, we haven't been able to figure out a solution to do this, without adding extra fields and automation, or a new sub-task type (which adds a lot of complexity to the project and to the users). 

We have found a work around using Plans, but the preferred solution for this team would be a kanban so any ideas of a solution would be very much appreciated, hopefully I have missed a cool way to create a filter, or there is a neat plugin that can do this.

I may be misunderstanding your requirement, but I think your subteam just wants a board with specific work types assigned to them along with sub-task of those work types.

To do this, you could set up a new Kanban board in the project with a board filter something like:

Project = MyProject AND IssueType IN ("WorkType", Sub-Task) AND "Team[Team]" = Team_ID

You could then set up swimlanes to be Story (or whatever else makes sense)
