Hello all,
We use jira as a scientific lab notebook and each ticket represents a sample in the lab - so far so good.
My question is: is there a way to set up a drop down list (intended to show if the sample exists or has been used up) that is always editable even when the ticket is otherwise closed to editing?
Would really appreciate some help on this!
Hi @Monika Rak , welcome to the Atlassian Community and thanks for your question.
I would use a transition screen for this.
First, if you haven't already, create the custom field or field you need.
Second, create a screen, and add just the field you want to be filled in to it.
Then, you can set up in the workflow a self-transition from the Closed to Closed status (so the issue doesn't move or get re-opened), and add the screen you created, like this
This is how it looks in the issue
And then the issue stays in the closed status.
Let me have your feedback about this solution or if you have any questions or doubts.
Cheers
Hello Valerie,
Thank you so much for taking the time to help. I tried to go through the steps that you outlined and got stuck on the one step that I thought I would know how to do easily:
It seems that my workflow does not have an edit button:

Are you working with a Team Managed project or a Company Managed project?
You should see that information in the bottom left corner of the navigation panel (on the left side of the screen).
Transition screens are available only for Company Managed projects.

Hi @Monika Rak , thanks for your feedback. As @Trudy Claspill says, my solution only works for a company-managed project. Sorry for assuming!
I think also the part about rendering the issue un-editable after it's closed is something that you can only do in a company-managed project / workflow. Would it be possible for you to use a company-managed project for this requirement?

Hi Valerie,
Working on transferring over as we speak. I may come back with questions once everything is set up.
Thanks to you and Trudy! I really appreciate you both taking the time to help me!

Now I just need to transfer over all the data. Thank you so very much @Valerie Knapp and @Trudy Claspill

Hello @Monika Rak
Welcome to the Atlassian community.
What method have you used to close the ticket to editing?

Hi Trudy,
I have attempted closing the ticket to editing by going into configure workflow and then editing the properties of a status with keys like:
jira.issue.editable - false
or
jira.permission.edit.denied
However this does mean that the dropdown status for sample availability which is description field I added to my issues as a dependent dropdown is also closed.
I'm willing to try anything
