How to remove redundant statuses

Hi community,
Over time we have built up a huge number of redundant statuses that I want to clean up.
I understand that if they're already in a workflow that I need to change those individually to new statuses, but my question is around cleaning up the current statuses in the dropdown when adding to a column.
