Instead of adding a field to my specific project in Jira, I added a GLOBAL field. I would like to remove the field completely and have it only in my project. How can I ensure that I remove this global field from Jira?
Hello @Julia R_
What steps did you execute to add the field?
I am trying to determine if you created a new Global custom field, or if you added an existing Global custom field to your project.
What type of project does this concern? Project specific custom fields are supported only for Team Managed projects.
The other replies referring to Contexts are relevant only if the project with which you are working is a Company Managed project.
If you have added an existing Global custom field to a Team Managed project, the Team Managed project will not show in the field Contexts. TM project can use Global custom fields only when they have a Global context.
If you created a new Global custom field through
https://yourBaseURL/jira/settings/issues/fields
...and you want it to be used only with a Company Managed project, then the Context information in the other replies is applicable.
If you were trying to create a new custom field in a Team Managed project, then you need to determine if the Global custom fields really does need to be deleted from Jira entirely, eliminating it from all projects where it may have been used, or if you just need to remove the reference to it in your TM project. And then you can recreate a TM-project-specific custom field in your TM project.

Thank you for your reply, @Trudy Claspill
I created the fields from within my Jira project. Project settings > Fields is where I added but should have added from within my Work types.
Now that you asked this question, I cannot imagine adding a Global Field would be so simple to add and so close to the project-specific custom field.
Here is a screenshot of where I added (RED) vs where I should have added (GREEN):

Hello @Julia R_
Based on the screen image you have provided, you appear to be using a Team Managed project. A Company Managed project would not have the +Add work type option available.
There have been changes rolling out in the field management area. Here are a couple of links to community articles.
I have not previously tested the functionality.
Just now I tried adding a field through the Fields option in a TM project.
I then went to the global Fields list from the gear > Work Items selection. That is the list of "global" fields available to Company and Team Managed projects.
https://yourBaseURL/jira/settings/issues/fields
I'm not seeing the field I created in the TM project being listed there. It may be a timing or cache issue, but I've waited and refreshed several times. The new field I created is not showing up in the Company Managed global Fields list. It is only showing up in the one project where I created it.
I suspect that Fields page you are seeing in the TM project is a combination page showing you all the truly "global" fields, plus the fields that are TM project-specific, plus allowing you to create additional TM project-specific fields.
I am the Org/Product admin in my environment. I would hope that a user that is not a Jira Product Admin, but rather only the Project Admin for a TM project, would not be able to add a new global custom Field from the TM project. Adding new global custom Fields is something that has always required Jira Product Admin permissions.

Hi @Julia R_
You can go to the Jira Settings-> Workitems->Fields -> search for the field name-> click on three dots (...) and click on 'Context and Default values'.
On the next screen, click on edit context, scroll down and switch from Global Context to 'Apply issue under a selected projects.
Select the project where you need to have this field and click on Modify.
Hope this helps!

Rajat

Go to Custom fields, open Contexts, make a new one for your project, then delete the global context. Now it’s only in your project.
