How to remove Org Administrator when you only have one?

JJ Gutierrez March 13, 2020

Recently our "org administrator" left so we need to remove them from our account. However, they are the only org administrator we have so we are not able to remove them right now.

Also, I contacted atlassian support and they said that they could not help me because we have the free tier account. They said I should ask in the atlassian community. Help with this would be greatly appreciated!

Hi JJ,

You can't remove the org administrator when there is only one user. All organizations must have at least one admin.

I'm not sure what the resolution. You can try the steps here:

https://confluence.atlassian.com/cloudkb/removing-a-site-admin-or-organization-admin-975031716.html

or here:

https://confluence.atlassian.com/cloudkb/transfer-jira-or-confluence-account-ownership-to-another-user-691012069.html

There's another knowledge base article that might be relevant, but I can't seem to find it right now. Let us know how you go with this one.

Hi Jimmy,

Thank you for your answer. Could you make me an "org administrator"? Currently, only the org admin that left can make give me that status.

Hi JJ,

As with most people on this community, we're not Atlassian staff so don't have access to the back end.

As above, I'm not sure what the resolution is; if you can't follow the above steps, then maybe that's something Atlassian need to review as a whole. There may not be a short term answer.

Can you try the above steps and let me know where you get stuck/which prerequiste you don't meet? Then we can try to tackle it together.

Hi Jimmy,

Thank you for sending these docs but they do not help. Here is my experience following the 2 docs you sent:

1. This one is designed for a user that is already an "org admin" and tells you how to remove other org admins. Already tried and doesn't work because I'm not an org admin.

2. This is designed for an "org admin" that is leaving. That is why it is called "transfer ownership". I tried this and could not do it because I cannot add new "org admins".

Do you know how I could send this question to Atlassian staff? I already tried Atlassian support.

Great, thanks. Yeah, I'll have to think about how to send it to Atlassian staff. As you have already experienced with cloud support, they'll ask for the URL and turn you away as you're on the free tier.

Maybe one of them will see it here, but this is the conundrum that you are in.
