How to manage a high-level view of tasks

I am having trouble implementing my ideal JIRA setup. Though projects work great to manage fine grained tasks, I would love to have another workspace with which I can keep track (and sanity) following all the fine grained development tasks and also use this other workspace to communicate with my business/sales colleagues.

I have tried the following but none of these approaches yet satisfies me.

- I used epics to "cluster" my dev tasks into fewer epics. I expressed these epics into a more functionality oriented vocabulary (my dev tasks go into technical details in their naming), since this was easier for my business/sales collegues to understand what was happening.

The problem I had with this approach was that UI for handling epics was a bit too complex and I never got my business/sales collegues to work and use my epics dashboards. I also felt that in some way I was abusing the use of epics since in agile jargon they fulfill another role.

- Then I tried creating another project that I call "product", and which is of "business type". These proved better for collaboration with my business/sales colleagues, since the drag and drop and simple columns UI fits them well. My colleagues are using it a lot but now I am the one struggling with this solutions.

I feel this solution lacks 2 things. First I would love to have the cards of the main board (the board for drag and dropping in to-do, in progress, and done columns) to have any visual anchor to easily recognize their type. In epics there was a color, and also for tasks types you have icons, but right now my product board feels very flat (all in grey). The other problem I have is that in this way I don't have a clear way to link the "product" project issues with my fine grained development issues. Ideally if I could link them such as with epics this could be great.

Any ideas on how to implement the functions I mention? Thanks beforehand!

Sounds like the problem exists outside of jira with your board and reporting design rather than with jira configuraation.

Do it with post its and note cards on a wall first, then figuring out how to display with jira will be easy.

If it helps, dont think about it in terms of jira configuration.
