How to fix broken filters after you rename a field

I want to change the name of a popular custom field. However, many users have filters using this field by its field name, not the custom field id cf[#####].

Is there anyway to change this field name without breaking the user's filters?

Or is there a way to globally find and replace the field name without asking everyone to do so?

There is nothing you can do on the UI other than to manually modify the filters and ask others to do it. Replacing in text in DB might be an option but I am not an expert in it!

thanks. I'm starting to use the custom field id which will allow you to change to any name. Its not convenient in JQL, hopefully newer JIRA versions than my 4.2 solved for it.
