How to filter what notifications are sent via email?

I only want to receive email notifications when certain tasks are completed or I am mentioned in a comment. Is this possible?

@Chris Shelton@mention should be working except if your JIRA Admin made some changes. You should get notified when someone mentions your name.

When you say get notified for certain tasks I assume you want to be notified for some but not others. Is it based on Issue Type or a Custom Field? What's the criteria to be notified for certain tasks but not others?  I am trying to understand in order to help you the best way I can
