Hi there

I have created a Project for my group of 4 people with 4 sub tasks.

Sub Task 1 blocks Sub task 2,3,4 and Sub task 2 blocks 3 and 4. I used the "Linked Issues" Blocked by feature to define this. I assumed that this will prevent from closing of Sub Task 3 before Sub Task 1 or 2 is closed. But I was able to. What other settings are necessary to enforce this rule?

Thanks

Hello @Roopa Murthy

Welcome to the Atlassian community.

There is no built in functionality based on links that have been created between issues. The link is simply a method for the users to understand relationships between issues.

There is no single setting that you can enable that will prevent the closure of issues if another issue that "blocks" it is not already closed.

In general you would need to customize the workflow to implement such a rule. However, there is not a native option within the workflow customizations specifically for checking the status of issues linked to the one you are trying to transition. Getting such a function would require that you get a third party app. Are you willing to consider that to meet your requirement?

The alternative is to use Automation Rules to detect that an issue has been Closed while it has linked "blocking" issues that are not Closed. You could then, in the same rule, automatically reopen the issue and/or send an email to a user about what has occurred.

Your post tags indicate you are using a Free subscription. If that is accurate, be aware that there are limits on how many Automation Rule executions you can have per month. You would need to consider how many rules you currently have executing each month, and how the addition of a rule for this scenario would impact your usage. For information on how that usage is calculated refer to:

Hi @Roopa Murthy

Yep, that doesn't work without some kind of 3rd party validator or automation. Are you in company or team managed project?
