I am looking to add a generic comment to a ticket when it is removed from the current active sprint through automation

Hi @Stephen Johnston -- Welcome to the Atlassian Community!

Yes, that is possible using a trigger on a change to the Sprint field, a check on the changelog smart values to confirm the work item was in the active sprint, and then add the comment.

Please note a rule like this can be challenging as there are known problems with the changelog available to rules for a field such as Sprint which has changed multiple times.  Testing will confirm if the rule works as expected, and there are workarounds with additional fields to help.

Have you tried creating the rule yet?  If so, and you are running into challenges, please post images of the complete rule and audit log details so the community can offer better suggestions.  Thanks!

Kind regards,
Bill
