How to best use Insights as a Product Manager

I've recently joined an organization with an existing Cloud Jira implementation where Jira is used for sprint planning and to develop a product roadmap. There is an Ideas board where product ideas can be added, and within these ideas there is the ability to add Insights, which I think is very powerful.

However, what I am struggling with is I can't determine how to best utilize Insights. I can't seem to find a way to create an Insight without an idea existing beforehand. But surely it should be the other way around - collect Insights, and tie them to a new Idea once enough Insights are collected to make the Idea "appear".

So, I feel like I am missing something? Or does everyone just make ideas first, then look for insights to validate?

Hi @Peter Harrison ,

Ideas and insights are usually from a product called Jira Product Discovery(JPD). In JPD, normal flow is an idea is created and contributors can provide their insights as a way to provide feedback on the idea.

Welcome to the Community, @Peter Harrison ! Can you confirm if you're using JPD? JPD is a great tool for prioritizing ideas and take them all the way to real projects.

Hello Folks,

Yes, we seem to be using JPD, I just couldn't tell we were using it - it doesnt seem to be labelled anywhere.

I agree that the normal flow for JPD seems to be an idea is created and then insights are used as a way to provide feedback. However, this seems really backwards to me. It seems like what should happen is you collect a number of insights, and eventually some of them tie into an idea.

@Peter Harrison ,

Here are some ways to identify JPD projects:

Click on Settings icon -> Spaces. Under the type look for "Product Discovery". I have attached a screenshot

Another way to determine if you are using a JDP project is to look 'Polaris' in the URL  https://<abc.atlassian.net>/jira/polaris/projects

Hello,

Welcome to community :)

By the description it seems you are referring to insights in JPD.

Please find details here : https://support.atlassian.com/jira-product-discovery/docs/create-and-manage-insights/

Few things we can keep in mind

  • Write clear idea titles

  • Add key fields: customer impact, business impact, confidence, effort/time.

  • Create views: quick wins, strategic bets, support-driven

  • Keep insights small and tagged

  • Link insights → ideas; link strong ideas → epics in Jira Software.

  • Use Discovery boards as your Now / Next / Later view for stakeholders.

  • Note decisions in comments

  • Review weekly: tidy ideas, update scores, promote ready items.

Thank You,

Prachi
