According to this guide, resolved issues will get a checkmark on the board in next-gen projects.

In my project then both issues in 3rd and 4th column get the checkmark. Is there a way to configure this in Jira so the checkmark only occurs items in the last column?

I haven't tried this but I would not expect there is anyway to do this as it is keying on "Resolved" issues. My question is why would you have resolved issues in any column other than the last?

I only want issues in the last column to have checkmarks, but for next-gen projects the default behavior seems to be that all columns (except the first two) will have checkmarks on their issues.

I have created a bug report for the issue.

This  is not a bug. The check marks result from an issue that has a resolution. They have nothing to do with columns. If you don’t want them in the third column then don’t make it resolved in the third column.
