How to allow users to edit ticket status in Edit mode screen?

The team would like the ability to edit the tasks status in edit mode. There are others that are fine doing it through the workflow buttons, although others would like to edit the status in the edit screen.

I received this screen when attempting to add the field in my jira task.

 

Is there no way to do this?

I did see a ticket for it. Curious if this might have already been resolved in another ticket?

Status is not a field, it's an indicator of where an issue is in the workflow.  To change it, you have to go through a transition.

In Cloud, in the next-gen view, the transitions are represented as a drop-down, which feels like it's an "edit of a field", but that is not going to be implemented in the classic projects or go to Server.

No, it's just totally different to a field.
