How to add fields to the smaller issue preview screen?

Amos_Wesner April 23, 2020

When I click on the link to an issue and get on the issue details page, I can see the recorded time needed as shown in the screenshot:

What I want: When I click on an issue card, a smaller preview of the issue appears (see other screenshot). I want to add the recorded time needed fields to this smaller preview screen aswell. Where can I add fields to this preview screen (not the detailed issue screen)?

Hi Amos,

That smaller preview is what we call the issue detail view.  It exists specifically on boards in Jira.  There are configuration options for this, which you can adjust if you are a board admin.  To so this you need to click the ellipsis (...) above that one in your screenshot and then select Board settings,

You can then go to Issue Details View.  On that page you can customize what fields appear here.

There are a few caveats about this:

  1. If you are not an admin of this board, you won't see the menu to get to the page where this can be configured
  2. Not all fields will always appear here. If the field configuration scheme used for the project's issue types has the fields hidden for example, those fields won't appear here even if added in this view.
  3. Even you are an Admin of that board, the new issue view in Jira the order in which fields appear here are set for issue types per project.  There is a purple background notification about this if you get to that issue details view configuration page:Screen Shot 2020-04-28 at 11.26.11 AM.png

I hope this helps.

Hi Andy, thanks for your answer!

I already checked the issue detail view but it seemed like the field for the recorded time needed isn't available. I then checked in my default field configuration if the field is visible, which it is. Yet I still can't choose it for the issue detail view, as shown in the screenshot. The field for recorded time needed won't show up anywhere. Do you know where I can add this field to be available here in the issue detail view?

Hi Amos,

I believe that field translates to "Log Work", this is not exactly a custom field in Jira though.  Technically this is a system field.  That particular field does exist in the field configuration, but this particular field is not something that you can actually add to appear on the issue view itself, nor can we make it appear in the issue detail view of the board.  Instead the Log Work is more of an action that occurs within the More -> log work (in Jira Server) or the ... -> Log work in Jira Cloud.

There is an open feature request for this ability over in JSWCLOUD-8120 : As a Rapid Board user I would like to see the Work Log in the detail view of an issue.  I recommend that you vote on this issue if this is something you would want to see here.

Sorry I did not realize in your initial post that this was the specific field you wanted to add here.  There does not appear to be clear way to add this to that view today.  In the mean time you should still be able to use the ... menu on that issue detail view to bring up that Log work action for this issue.

I realize this is not exactly what you are looking for here in having a field appear on that screen, but this is the best available alternative that I can find to provide this functionality currently.

Andy
