How to View Different Workflows on Single Kanban Board

Sruthi Bobba May 12, 2025

As the admin for our team-managed project, I am currently implementing Jira in our company. Being a new user, I need some guidance on configuring different workflows based on issue types.

Here are the workflows I have created (as an example):

  • Epic: To Do > In Progress > Agreed > Done
  • Task: To Do > Escalated > On Hold > Closed

While I have successfully created these workflows, I am encountering an issue where new issues do not appear on the Kanban board. The message displayed is: "For work item xyz to be visible, it must match your project and filters, and have a status that's assigned to the board."

When I check workflows and Workflow schemes in project settings, both the workflows are in inactive status.

Could you please provide assistance on how to ensure that issues with different workflows are displayed correctly on the Kanban board? Specifically, I need guidance on:

  1. Activating the newly created workflows and workflow schemes.
  2. Configuring the Kanban board to accommodate different workflows for each issue type.
  3. Ensuring that all statuses from the workflows are mapped to columns on the board.

Thank you for your support.

Hi Sruthi - Welcome to the Atlassian Community!

Team-managed projects (TMP) are self-contained and do not share any other components with other projects (with a minor exception for some custom fields). This is why many admins prefer to not use TMP projects and use only Company-managed projects (CMP).

The path you are going to for the Inactive workflows are for CMP projects only and do not apply to TMP projects.

You should switch over and start using CMP projects if that is what you are looking for.

Thanks for the response, John!

Is there a way to create multiple workflows in TMP?

I believe you can create different workflows for each work item type.

I was able to create different workflows for each work item type, but the workflows are in inactive status. How do I activate the workflows?

They are active when you create them in TMP projects or update them.
