We are running Jira Cloud and using Team-Managed projects. I want to enable Ranking for better backlog/issue management. I've read the articles, but the section describes selections/directions that don't directly match our board(s). I'm suspecting that Ranking is available for Company-Managed projects but not Team-Managed.
Would appreciate directions/tips/etc on this.
Thanks,
-John Tucci
Ranking is on by default for Team Managed projects.
Ranking is how issues are ordered in the backlog and board columns.
In Company Managed projects that is seen in the board's filter as "ORDER BY Rank", and those board filters could be modified such that ranking is disabled.
In Team Managed project boards you are not allowed to modify the filter. So, Ranking is enabled automatically and can't be disabled.
If you can drag and drop issues up and down the list in a column or in the Backlog screen, then Ranking is enabled.

Can you provide a link to the document you are referencing?
Here are some links to documents that explain how Ranking works in Jira:

You don't explicitly set a Rank field. The field is automatically set for you as you drag and drop your issues in the Backlog screen to place them in the order in which you want them to be worked.

I can't seem to post a reply because I keep getting the "Invalid HTML code was removed..." message. Is there a way to communicate directly (email? MS Teams?). My email is JTucci@megabytesystems.com

Hello, Again, @Trudy Claspill and @Mark Segall :
I would like to continue this discussion/investigation, but as I mentioned above, my attempts to include info prevent sending subsequent messages. Is it possible to communicate directly? My email is JTucci@megabytesystems.com. I'm also on MS Teams and Zoom.
Thanks & Regards,
-John

Hi @John Tucci - When you say "enable ranking". What are you trying to do? Ranking is just the ability to drag issues up and down to sort them. Are you trying to enable the backlog feature? If so, you just need to go to Project Settings >> Features and enable backlog.

Hello, @Mark Segall , @Trudy Claspill :
I want to assign ordinal numbers to the issues on the Kanban Board and in the Backlog as a means to do Backlog Grooming, and so that the developers know exactly the order in which they are to take on issues. The literature mentions having a "unique numeric field titled Rank"; but it doesn't state if that is a pre-defined/default field that is available, or if I can/must add a custom Number field to my task definitions and name it "Rank".
Please let me know if I've described this clearly enough. I'm trying to migrate this team from a tops-down, "command-and-control" environment to Agile. Having Ordinal Ranking would give me a clear, concise mechanism to drive management to the process...and the responsibility to make judicious, tough decisions about what-needs-to-be-done-when.
Thanks to both for your interest and prompt responses.
