How to Bulk Create Folders in Jira Requirement Tree from Excel (R4J Integration)?

Sowmya_Jayatheertha

Manually creating a folder for every heading in the Jira Requirement Tree is very time-consuming.

Is there any option or plugin that allows automatic folder creation from Excel headings into the Jira Requirement Tree?

Specifically:

  • Can the R4J Excel Add-In (version 4.1.0-651) be used to create folders in the Jira tree automatically?
  • If yes, what is the correct approach or template for bulk folder creation?
  • Are there any best practices for mapping folder paths in Excel to R4J?

Any guidance, documentation links, or examples would be greatly appreciated!

Hello @Sowmya_Jayatheertha ,

Good day!
Thank you for your message.

If you are already on Jira Cloud, you can use the Excel Add-in to create Folders the same way you create Issues - as Folders are a separate issue type in easeRequirements Cloud. We recommend installing the latest Excel Add-in (version 4.11).
You can download the installer here:
R4J_Excel_Setup_4.11.0.1407-20250930-installer.msi
Kindly uninstall the old Excel Add-in (Excel to Jira Integration) first before installing the latest version.

You may also download a sample Excel file and connect it to your Cloud instance.
Link: Sample Folder Creation Excel Add-in

  • Connect to your Instance
  • Leave the Key column empty to create new issue or folders.
  • Update the Project Key and the Requirements Path (<Project Name>/Main Folder)
  • Please ensure the folders mentioned in the Requirements Path are created first and arranged in order.
  • Click "Check" button to activate the Upload Data button
  • Click "Upload Data" button

Hello @Voncarlo Giovanni Pasco

Thank you for your earlier response and guidance. I wanted to clarify that we are actually using Jira Data Center, not Jira Cloud as mentioned earlier.

Could you please share a step-by-step guide for creating the folder structure automatically in easeRequirements (R4J) for Jira Data Center?

Thank You,

Sowmya

Hello @Sowmya_Jayatheertha

Good day!
Thank you for your response.

For easeRequirements Data Center, you simply need to define the requirement path of an issue in the "Requirement Path" column and it will automatically create folders for you.

For example, you can directly specify a path like "Test Project/Main Folder/Folder A" in the Requirements Path of a new or existing issue.
When you upload this, it will create the folders "Main Folder" and "Folder A" under the specified structure, and the issue will automatically be placed in that path.

We hope this clarifies your inquiry.

Hello @Sowmya_Jayatheertha ,

thanks for you question. Yes, you should be able to use the Excel Add-In to create the folder structure. My team will give you an answer here shortly, but would need to know if you are using easeRequirements in the Jira Cloud (or still on premise as Data Center solution)?

Best Regards,

Bernhard from Ease Solutions
