How is the Guideline Established on Burndown Report

John Bacon July 6, 2022

When viewing the sprint burndown chart, there is a grey line called the guideline.  I'm assuming this guideline line, is what the recommended burndown rate should be over time and where it can be used to compare against the Remaining burndown line.   How is the Guideline burndown line established?

It is exactly what you say, a calculation of what you should be burning down based on a simple average.  It's only a guide because burndown is stepped - you burn down when an issue is complete, not by telling Jira how much you've done every second.

If you were to ignore the flat bit Jira adds for weekends, and just draw the chart for working days, you'd get a straight line running from the total estimate for all the stories committed to in the sprint at the start of the sprint to 0 estimate at the end of the sprint.
