How is priority order defined, when multiple items in backlog have same priority?

Hi, Does anyone here know when Backlog is prioritised using the priority field and if multiple items have the same priority value, what is the second order of priority that Jira uses to order the items as is?

Hi @Parikshit Ghosh

From testing this - I think it's just by created date (newest > oldest).

I changed the filter direction (ASC / DESC), and updated Issues - and it remained in created order beyond Priority, when using it for ranking.

I'd probably recommend...

  • Using an alternative method of ranking (like Rank, or a custom prioritisation method with more unique values, such as WSJF).
    • You could highlight priority issues using quick filters, or swimlanes?
  • Having a secondary ORDER BY field - for example ORDER BY priority,Rank ASC
