How do you manage large branching storylines and assets in long-term game projects?

Hi everyone,

I’m currently exploring how long-running game projects manage complex branching storylines, frequent updates, and a growing number of assets over time. A good example is games like Summertime Saga, which continuously expand with new characters, routes, locations, and UI improvements across versions.

From a project-management and documentation point of view, I’m curious to know:

  • How do teams track multiple story branches and dependencies efficiently?

  • What’s the best way to document narrative changes so nothing breaks between updates?

  • Do tools like Jira or Confluence work well for managing story logic, quests, and assets together?

  • Any tips for keeping workflows clean as the project scales over years?
